There cervicitis it is an irritation or a condition of infection of the cervix. Determined by different organisms, cervicitis can be acute - symptoms start suddenly and are severe - or chronic - symptoms last for a period of several months, or even longer.

But what are the causes of cervicitis? And how to recognize it? How to behave in the face of such a condition which, evidently, deserves a clinical study by your referring doctor?

Causes of cervicitis

There cervicitis it can be caused by a fair and varied number of sexually transmitted infections, including gonorrhea, chlamydia, herpes or trichomoniasis. Often confused with vaginitis, cervicitis actually has very specific symptoms, which may be useful to investigate. Let's find out together in the next paragraph.

Symptoms of cervicitis

Although it is true that every woman with cervicitis can have different symptoms, in reality the following list is composed of the most common and most recurrent symptoms, which are generally experienced in almost all patients:

  • purulent discharge (i.e., containing pus),
  • pelvic pain,
  • bleeding between menstrual periods or after intercourse,
  • urinary problems.

It should also be taken into account that infections inside the vagina are easily transmitted to the cervix. Subsequently, the cervix tissue can become inflamed and form a real open sore. A first sign of this condition and evolution is the presence of a pus-like vaginal discharge.

Symptoms of cervicitis can resemble other conditions or medical problems. It is precisely for this reason that it is good to always consult your doctor for a diagnosis.

Cervicitis Diagnosis

In addition to a complete medical history and a physical and pelvic exam, you may also be tested for chlamydia, gonorrhea, herpes and trichomoniasis which, as we saw a few paragraphs ago, constitute the main group of determinants of cervicitis.

Your specialist may also investigate a more complete vaginal exam to see if you have pelvic inflammatory disease.

Treatment of cervicitis

But how cervicitis is treated?

In general, the specific treatment for cervicitis will be determined by your doctor based on a number of assessment elements, such as:

  • age, general health and medical history,
  • the extent of the disease,
  • the type and severity of symptoms,
  • your tolerance for drugs, procedures or specific therapies,
  • expectations about the course of the disease,
  • your opinion or preference on the matter.

In any case, the treatment against cervicitis will obviously be aimed at reducing the symptoms and preventing the spread of the infection and may include the use of antibiotics useful for killing infecting organisms, and the treatment of sexual partners.

Complications of cervicitis

Cervicitis is caused by organisms which, if left untreated, can travel to the uterus and fallopian tubes. This certainly unwelcome evolution can lead to the presence of pelvic inflammatory diseases, which can lead, in the most serious hypotheses, to conditions of infertility and peritonitis, a potentially lethal infection. The organisms can also be passed on to sexual partners which can develop serious complications.

Conclusions

In addition to what has been outlined above, we cannot but devote some further space to conclusions on cervicitis.

We therefore summarize how cervicitis can be defined as a condition of irritation or infection of the uterine cervix, and that this condition is usually caused by the presence of some organisms that arrive based on a fair number of potentially sexually transmitted infections.

As for the symptoms, these can include purulent discharge, pelvic pain, bleeding between one period and another or after sexual intercourse, or urinary problems.

It is essential to try to treat this condition in a timely manner in order to avoid the complications that could arise as a result of this condition. In particular, if not treated effectively and under medical supervision, the organisms that cause cervicitis can move to the uterus and fallopian tubes, causing pelvic inflammatory diseases. Treatment of cervicitis includes antibiotics and treatment of sexual partners.

What to do if cervicitis is suspected

Finally, let's close with some reflections on what to do if you suspect you have contracted cervicitis. The first step to take is, of course, to request a visit from your doctor, which will be useful in order to ascertain the existence of the disease and to be able to start the most effective treatment path.

Before the visit, we recommend that you write down the questions you want to answer, and what are all the characteristics of your condition, from the moment of onset to its current evolution. It may be helpful to have someone accompany you to help you ask questions and remember what your doctor tells you.

During the visit, remember to show all the names of drugs, treatments or tests that your doctor recommends, as well as any information that the healthcare professional should share with you. If a follow-up appointment is planned - as likely -, write the date, time and purpose of the visit. Also write down all the references of your doctor, so that you can contact him promptly if you have any questions.

We hope that this brief information on cervicitis will be useful for you to better cope with this condition. Remember that although in most cases the treatment is able to give excellent results in a short time and although the condition can be adequately dealt with, it is good to act promptly and not underestimate its characteristics.
